Definition of the word ahead

The word "ahead" has its roots in Old English. The earliest recorded use of the word dates back to around the 10th century. It is derived from the phrase "æþeþefōn," which was a combination of "æþeþ" meaning "oar" and "fōn" meaning "" (to flow"). Initially, the word referred to the act of moving a boat or a ship away from the shore, i.e., to head into deeper waters. Over time, the meaning of the word evolved to encompass other concepts such as progressing, moving forward, or being in the lead.
