Definition of the word air pump

The term "air pump" originated in the 17th century during the scientific advances of the Enlightenment era. The air pump, also known as an air pumping device, was invented by the English physicist and scientist Robert Boyle in the mid-1650s. Boyle's air pump was basically a large glass jar with a piston and a valve that allowed air to be sucked out of the jar, creating a partial vacuum.
