People dreaded the damp and ill-ventilated conditions of their homes, especially in the bathroom and laundry areas, where wet clothes and linens would heavily contaminate the air, leading to mildew and odor issues. To remedy this, houses or apartments were designed with cupboards specially created for the purpose of drying and storing laundry. These spaces were typically positioned at high elevations, such as near chimneys or under the stairs, to enable sufficient air circulation and better heat retention.
