Definition of the word assistant referee

The term "assistant referee" in sports, specifically in football or soccer, has its origins in the mid-1990s when the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which governs the laws of the game, introduced a new system to make matches more efficient and fair. Prior to the 1990s, football matches were typically officiated by just one referee, who had the responsibility of making decisions on matters such as fouls, offsides, and penalties, all while also ensuring that the game flowed smoothly. However, with the growing complexity and intensity of the game, the added strain on the referee became increasingly apparent. Therefore, IFAB proposed the introduction of an assistant referee (or AR) – a second official whose primary role is to ensure that the ball goes out of play and assist the referee with decisions regarding offsides, coinciding with the expansion of high-tech video replays in sports. ARs, who are usually positioned on the sideline, use a flag to indicate to the referee and the fans when the ball goes out of play or when a player is offside.
