Origin of the word atom

The word "atom" originates from ancient Greece. The Greek philosopher Democritus (460-370 BCE) is credited with coining the term "atomon" (ατόμος), which means "indivisible" or "uncuttable." He believed that matter was composed of tiny indivisible particles that could not be further divided. The term was later adopted by other Greek philosophers, such as Epicurus, who developed the concept of atomism. The word "atom" was introduced into Latin as "atomus" and later into English in the 14th century. In the 17th century, the English scientist John Locke used the term to describe the fundamental building blocks of matter. The modern concept of the atom, with its negatively charged particles (electrons) and positively charged nucleus, was developed by the likes of J.J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, and Niels Bohr in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
