The term "backspace" in computing refers to a specific keyboard key that is used to move the cursor one space to the left or erase the character immediately before it. This function was first introduced in the late 1960s with the IBM Selectric Typeball, a typewriter-like device that could hold multiple typebars in a row. It allowed users to select the desired character to be printed by pushing a selector lever or typeball, which would then print that character onto the paper.
