Definition of the word battering ram

The term "battering ram" originated during medieval times, specifically during the Crusades. Back in those days, castle walls and gates were incredibly sturdy, making it almost impossible to breach them during an attack. In order to overcome this defense mechanism, siege engines called "sappers" were used. These were basically large wooden beams with a flat, heavy head attached, known as a "billhook." The idea was to swing this device at the castle walls, hoping to break them down and provide a way for the soldier's entrance. The term "battering ram" derives from the action of this weapon, almost literally snapping obvious comparisons to an animal with this “rambunctious” passtime. The name "battering ram" gained prominence in the 16th century because it perfectly described the weapon's method of destruction - a heavy object battered against a door or wall until it broke or collapsed. The name has stuck ever since and is now commonly used to describe any device used to breach stronghold structures. In modern warfare, the battering ram has evolved into highly sophisticated and large-scale military equipment like modern-day bulldozers and tanks, which use their weight and power to push through obstructions and clear the way for troops. Thus, the phrase "battering ram" still accurately describes such devices, implying their primary use and marching towards its goal like a true "ram" would.
