It is derived from the Russian word "beлый" (beliy), meaning "white," which refers to the striking white color of the beluga whale's skin. The name "beluga" is also sometimes spelled "behula" and "belluga." The beluga whale, biological name Delphinapterus leucas, belongs to the family of toothed whales called Odontoceti.
