Definition of the word bottle opener

The term "bottle opener" is a modern-day invention, as the process of opening a cork-sealed bottle used to be quite different in the past. Before the 19th century, bottles were sealed with a wax plug or a twist-off capsule, which didn't require any specialized tool to open. However, with the arrival of champagne and other sparkling wines in the 1800s, a new type of bottle closure - the cork - became popular. The cork stopper, made from the bark of a cork oak tree, was sealed into the bottle's neck with a tight fit, but it also proved challenging to remove without breaking the seal or the bottle itself. As a result, people started searching for creative ways to open these bottles, such as using a knife or a nail to pry out the cork, or scratching the cork with a coin or a key, which could damage both the bottle and the cork. In the Victorian era, the "bottle opener" was invented, thanks to a clever and industrious German silver craftsman named Wilhelm Albert. He crafted a small device, consisting of two curved, metal prongs, that fitted snugly around the neck of the bottle and fit under the cork. The user then applied gentle pressure to the lever, and the cork popped out effortlessly. Since then, bottle openers have evolved and come in various designs and materials, from simple ones with a stick-on label to sophisticated, electric or wireless options.
