Definition of the word bowling alley

The term "bowling alley" originated in the early 19th century when the game of bowling first gained popularity in England. Initially, the game was played on outdoor landscapes, such as village greens or outdoor paths, and the alleys were simply the pathways on which the game was played. In the 1840s, indoor bowling alleys began to emerge as a result of the increasing popularity of the game, particularly in industrialized cities.
