Definition of the word breakdown lane

The term "breakdown lane" is commonly used to describe a lane adjacent to the regular traffic lanes on a highway or freeway. These lanes are often designated as emergency lanes, shoulder lanes, or breakdown lanes, and are open for vehicle use only in the event of a mechanical or electrical failure, or other types of emergencies that require a sudden stop. The origin of the term "breakdown lane" is related to the fact that these lanes were originally intended to help motorists who experienced engine problems or otherwise became stranded while driving. The lane's wide shoulder design offered sufficient space for stricken vehicles to safely maneuver themselves to the side of the road. In the early 1960s, as the number of vehicles on the road increased, so did the likelihood of collisions caused by stranded cars being pushed far left onto the shoulder, creating a hazardous situation for passing motorists. Therefore, states began mandating the creation of dedicated breakdown lanes to minimize hazards and offer safe passage for emergency responders to respond quickly to stranded drivers. Today, breakdown lanes are a common feature on highways and freeways, and the term "breakdown lane" continues to describe this critical lane in need control for drivers.
