Definition of the word calorie

The word "calorie" originated from the French word "caloire," which was coined by French physicist Nicolas Clément in 1842. Clement defined a calorie as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. The unit of measurement was later standardized to be equivalent to the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. Before Clement's definition, the term "calorie" was used in a different context, referring to a unit of heat measurement, but it was not widely adopted.
