Origin of the word canton

The word "canton" has its roots in the Middle Ages. In French, the word "canton" originally meant "corner" or "quarter." It referred to a quarter or division of a larger territory or town. During the Swiss mercenary wars in the 14th century, soldiers from different regions were grouped into quarters or "cantons" based on their geographic origin. This term was later adopted by the Federal Charter of 1291, which united several of these regions into the Swiss Confederation. Over time, the term "canton" came to be used more broadly to describe any territorial division or province. Today, the term is used in many countries, including Switzerland, Chile, and the United States (as in the Canton of New York). Despite its evolution in meaning, the word "canton" remains connected to its roots in medieval geography and military organization.
