Definition of the word carbon

The word "carbon" comes from the Latin "carbo," meaning coal or ember. This Latin term was derived from the Proto-Indo-European root "ker," which meant " ashes" or "ashes of wood." In ancient Rome, charcoal was used as a writing material, and the Latin term "carbo" referred to this type of writing material. When English scientist Robert Boyle first isolated carbon in 1681, he referred to it as "fixed air" because it was once stuck in wood or other organic matter. Later, the term "carbon" became widely used to refer to the element, derived from the Latin "carbo" and its association with coal and charcoal.
