Definition of the word carbuncle

The word "carbuncle" derives from the Middle English word "carbouncle" which, in turn, originated from the Medieval Latin word "carbunculus". In its original meaning, a carbuncle was a gemstone believed to have magic powers, particularly the ability to repel evil spirits. The Medieval Latin term "carbunculus" literally translates to "little coal" and referred to a bright red gemstone, such as a ruby or garnet, due to its resemblance to burning coals. Through usage, the meaning of "carbuncle" evolved to describe a painful and infectious skin lesion that resembled a cluster of boils or abscesses.
