Definition of the word carnival

The word "carnival" has its roots in the Latin term "carne vale," meaning "goodbye to meat." During the Middle Ages, it was a time of celebration and feasting before the 40-day Lenten fast, which is still observed by many Christian traditions today. The term "carnal" referred to the excesses and indulgences of the pre-Lenten period. As time went on, the term "carnival" began to refer specifically to the festive and entertaining aspects of the pre-Lenten celebrations. The concept of a festive, indoor/outdoor spectacle featuring music, dance, acrobatics, and other performances evolved in Italy and spread throughout Europe. In the 17th century, the term "carnival" arrived in the Americas, where it merged with local traditions and became an integral part of celebrations in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans, and Trinidad and Tobago. Today, the word "carnival" is synonymous with colorful parades, elaborate costumes, and public revelry.
