Definition of the word chaplain

The word "chaplain" originated in the Middle Ages, during the Crusades. The Anglo-Norman word "capellanus" was used to describe a clergyman who served as a personal spiritual advisor to a nobleman, knight or wealthy layperson. This was commonly known as "household service," where the chaplain would offer prayers, provide religious guidance, and offer comfort and counsel to the person for whom he served. The role of chaplain evolved over time, particularly in military settings. During battles, many soldiers would seek spiritual solace and offering of prayers, and hence chaplains began accompanying armies to cater to the religious needs of soldiers. The chaplains' duties expanded to include providing comfort to dying soldiers, burying the dead, and assisting injured soldiers on the battlefield. The term "chaplain" later became a designation for clergy members serving in different settings; hospitals, prisons, universities, corporations, and government organizations, to name a few. The role today encompasses pastoral care, counseling, administration, faith education, and leadership.
