Definition of the word chief justice

The term "chief justice" originated in England during the medieval period when the judicial system was primarily run by the monarch. The monarch would appoint a senior judge, known as a justiciar, to oversee the administration of justice. This position eventually evolved into the role of chief justice, which came into formal use during the reign of King Edward III in the 14th century. The role of chief justice was created to provide continuity and stability in the judicial system during times when the monarch was absent or incapacitated. The chief justice was responsible for overseeing the work of the lower courts and ensuring that justice was being carried out consistently and fairly. The term "chief" was added to signify the individual's superior authority and responsibility. In England, the position of chief justice was initially tied to the role of Lord Chancellor, which was a parliamentary position.
