Definition of the word cigarette lighter

The term "cigarette lighter" originally referred to a small object designed to ignite a gas or oil lamp. These early lighters, which were introduced in the late 1800s, were typically circular in shape and attached to fixtures such as tables, lamps, or wall sconces. They were called "lighters" because their primary function was to assist in the lighting process. The first cigarette lighters resembled the smaller version of these lamp lighters, but instead of being attached to a fixture, they were portable and handheld. They were introduced in the early 1900s and initially called "cigarette matches" or "cigarette cases." These early cigarette lighters were made of silver or gold and were expensive and luxurious items, primarily used by affluent individuals. Over time, cigarette lighter technology evolved, and disposable lighters became popular in the 1950s and 1960s. These lighters replaced the need for flint strikers or sharp blade edges found on earlier versions.
