Origin of the word company town

The term "company town" originated in the 19th century in the United States, specifically in the era of the Industrial Revolution. Company towns were settlements established by corporations as a strategy to house and control the workers of their factories or mines, usually in remote and resource-rich locations. The company would typically own not only the factories or mines but also the land, housing, and essential services such as stores, schools, and churches for the town's inhabitants. This created a sort of dependency, as the employees had little choice but to work for the company and rely on it for their basic needs, at times even their very living conditions. The first widely known example of a company town was Company Shops, established by John Chadwick in New Jersey in the 1820s. This model was replicated by numerous industrialists in the following decades, including Charles Pratt in New Jersey and George Pullman in Illinois. By the turn of the century, over a thousand such towns were documented in the United States.
