The term "conning tower" in naval terminology refers to a tall, superstructure located on top of a ship's deck, primarily intended to house the ship's command center. The origins of this term can be traced back to the early 20th century when submarines first began to appear on the high seas. At the time, submarines were relatively new and untested, and their scrappy design left a critical flaw - a noticeable blind spot. The design of these submarines meant that their conning tower, serving as the central control hub, was protruding above the waterline, making it more visible to the enemy. This led to an increased risk of damage and exposed personnel to enemy fire. As a solution, naval architects began to incorporate "hurricane decks" that not only provided more armor protection to the conning tower but also covered it from weather and falling objects. The advanced towers were easily identifiable due to their height and thin design in comparison to the rest of the ship's profile.
