Definition of the word cooking gas

The term "cooking gas" was coined in the late 19th century when Robert Boyley, a British scientist, discovered a method to liquefy natural gas by compressing it at very low temperatures. This liquefied natural gas, also known as LNG, was then transported and sold for industrial and household use. Originally, the liquefied gas was known as franklinite, named after Benjamin Franklin who was said to have observed natural gas escaping from wells in the state of Pennsylvania in the early 1760s. Later, as the scientific community began to understand the properties of this gas, it was referred to as inflammable air, fixed air, and retail gas. Finally, in 1855, the German chemist Hermann Sprengel coined the term "Gasogen" to describe the gas obtained from natural gas wells, which was primarily used for lighting. However, it was not until the late 19th century that the term "cooking gas" came into use as LNG was recognized for its potential as a cooking fuel.
