Definition of the word county clerk

The position of county clerk, which is responsible for maintaining official records and administering oaths of office in a specific county, can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon times in England. The Anglo-Saxons called this position "reeve," which means a farmer or a local administrator. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the role of the reeve evolved, and the function expanded to include administrative duties related to taxes and land ownership. These duties were handled by a royal officer called a "shire reeve" in each shire (county).
