The term "cross hairs" refers to the narrow vertical and horizontal lines that intersect in the center of a telescopic sight or a modern firearm's optical sight. This feature enables a shooter to precisely aim and accurately fire at a target. The origin of the term "cross hairs" can be traced back to the late 1600s, during the invention of the microscope. In order to look more precisely through the microscope lenses, a renowned Dutch scientist named Antonie van Leeuwenhoek inserted a line, made with a diamond needle, between the objective lenses. This line helped to focus light on the target and also acted as a sight to steady the viewer's gaze. The term "hair" described the thinness of the diamond line, while "cross" referred to the manner in which the line intersected itself in the form of an "X" shape. As technology evolved, the refinement of artillery and firearms spurred innovation in the manufacturing of sight systems. Numerous improvements to the original design emerged from the mid-1800s, which includes the formation of the modern telescopic sight. This system enabled the use of eyepieces and objective lenses, and continual optical improvements helped to increase the accuracy and quality of the sight.
