The term "dental dam" originated in the field of dentistry in the 1930s, where it was initially used as a sheet of rubber or latex material placed over a patient's teeth during dental procedures to isolate the operatory area and prevent the spread of water, saliva, and other debris. The use of dental dams in dentistry helped in maintaining a dry, sterile environment, making it easier for the dentist to work efficiently and accurately. However, the sexual health community adopted the term "dental dam" in the late 1980s, developing a new use for it as a barrier method during oral sex. In this context, a dental dam is a thin polyurethane sheet used to cover the genitals or anus during oral sex, protecting against the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes.
