Definition of the word depart

The word "depart" comes from Old French "departir," which is derived from trovare, meaning "to take away" or "to remove." This Old French word is itself a combination of "de," meaning "from," and partir, which is the Latin word "partire," meaning "to divide" or "to part." In Latin, "partire" was used to describe breaking or dividing something into two or more parts, but it also had a sense of "to go away" or "to depart."
