Origin of the word dictionary

The word "dictionary" has its roots in the Latin language. The Latin word "dictio" means "a saying" or "a speaking", and the suffix "-nary" means "pertaining to" or "relating to". Therefore, the term "dictionary" can be literally translated to "a book of sayings" or "a book of speaking". The concept of a dictionary, however, dates back to ancient Mesopotamia, where clay tablets were used to record Sumerian words and their meanings. The first written dictionaries were created by the ancient Greeks, such as the "Totius" dictionary by Philo of Byzantium in the 2nd century BCE. The modern dictionary, however, is attributed to Samuel Johnson's "A Dictionary of the English Language" published in 1755, which was a comprehensive reference work that defined over 40,000 words. The term "dictionary" has since become a standard term for any book or digital reference work that collects and defines the words and phrases of a language.
