Definition of the word drum majorette

The word "drum major" has been around since the 18th century, originally denoting the leader of a Scottish regimental band. The role of the drum major evolved to include the conductor of a marching band during parades and ceremonies. In the late 19th century, as women began to join marching bands, the position of "drum majorette" was created as a female counterpart to the male drum major. The term "majorette" was chosen to maintain the correlation between the female role and the male title, and to emphasize her subordinate position within the band hierarchy. However, the term fell out of favor in the mid-20th century as women's roles in marching bands became more prominent and gender-specific titles were phased out. Today, drum majors and band leaders are referred to simply as "drum majors," regardless of gender.
