Definition of the word emulation

The word "emulation" has its roots in Latin, derived from the words "emimen", meaning "to strive after", and "tio", meaning "desire". The term was first used in English in the 15th century, meaning "the act of striving to be like someone or something, or to imitate their qualities or achievements". Over time, the meaning of emulation expanded to include both positive (e.g. striving to be better than oneself) and negative (e.g. duplicating the achievements of others without adding value) connotations.
