Definition of the word exclamation mark

The exclamation mark, also known as the exclamation point, is a punctuation mark used to indicate enthusiasm, surprise, or strong feelings. Its origin can be traced back to the late 16th century when it was originally called a "point of exclamation" by the French grammarian Henri Estienne. Estienne added this punctuation mark to his 1551 editions of the Greek and Latin classics to differentiate exclamatory sentences from other types of sentences. The mark he used was a small upright stroke placed above the text. The name "exclamation point" was adopted by English-speaking writers in the 19th century, and the mark's use became more widespread in printed texts. Over time, the shape of the exclamation point evolved from a simple upright stroke to the more familiar curved form we see today.
