Definition of the word exoskeleton

The word "exoskeleton" has a fascinating origin. It comes from the Greek words "exo" meaning "outside" and "keleton" meaning "bone" or "skeleton". The term was first proposed by French zoologist Pierre-Hubert Milne-Edwards in 1839. Milne-Edwards was studying the external, hardened coverings of arthropods like insects, crustaceans, and arachnids. He used the term "exosquelette" in French, which was later translated into English as "exoskeleton". The concept of an exoskeleton refers to the outer, protective layer that provides structural support and protection for these animals, separate from their inner, soft body.
