Definition of the word feature film

The term "feature film" originates from the early 1900s when motion pictures were primarily short films, commonly referred to as "short features," "specials," or "newsreels." These films were usually five to ten minutes long and accompanied by a main attraction, which was often a longer feature film. As motion picture technology improved, it became possible to create longer films with more complex plots and characters. These films were no longer simply "short features" but rather "featured attractions," hence the term "feature film." The first commercially successful feature film is considered to be Regent's The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), which was two reels, or approximately 20 minutes in length. This breakthrough led to the creation of longer films, and the term "feature film" stuck, replacing the previous designations of "featured attractions" and "short features." Today, the term "feature film" refers to motion pictures that are typically 80 minutes or longer, although the exact time limit can vary depending on the specific industry and distribution platform. Regardless of its evolution, "feature film" is now a standard term in the film industry that continues to represent motion pictures with substantive storylines, characters, and production values.
