Definition of the word fig leaf

The phrase "fig leaf" is a figurative term that originated from a Greek myth. According to the legend, after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, they became self-conscious and tried to hide their nakedness. In art depicting this scene, Adam and Eve are often shown covering their private parts with fig leaves.
