The term "firework" originated from the Middle English word "ferre werke," which was a literal translation of the Chinese term "huǒ jiāzi," meaning "fire flowers." When these pyrotechnics first arrived in Europe during the 13th century via trade routes, they were a novelty and initially served asendless inventions. In the 14th century, they caught the attention of two popes, Clement VI and Urban VI, who saw their value in military battles and festivities, leading to a surge in popular use of fireworks in European societies. The term "firework" was officially recorded in the English language in the 16th century and is still widely used today to describe the colorful and striking outdoor displays put on for festivals, holidays, and other celebrations.
