Origin of the word flag day

The concept of Flag Day, a day dedicated to honoring and displaying national flags, originated in the United States. In 1885, a Woman's National Association meeting in New York City adopted a resolution encouraging the observation of a "National Flag Day" on June 14th in commemoration of the anniversary of the adoption of the American flag. However, the idea didn't gain widespread popularity until years later. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially recognized June 14th as Flag Day, declaring, "It seems appropriate that the anniversary of the adoption of our flag by the Continental Congress should be commemorated by the adoption of a law making June 14th National Flag Day." Despite this, Congress didn't officially acknowledge Flag Day as a federal holiday until August 3, 1949, when President Harry S. Truman signed into law an act making it the 14th day of June. Today, while Flag Day is not a federal holiday, it is still celebrated in the United States as a way to promote American patriotism and honor the nation's history and values.
