Origin of the word floater

The scientific name for floaters is muscae volitantes, which is Latin for "flying flies." This archaic name reflects the ancient belief that these floating objects were actually small insects trapped inside the eye. In reality, floaters are formed when the gel-like substance in the back of the eye, called the vitreous humor, begins to liquefy and shrink as we age. As this occurs, tiny clumps of protein and other material in the vitreous humor cast shadows against the retina, creating the appearance of floaters. Floaters are generally not a cause for concern and do not require medical attention unless they suddenly become numerous, obstruct vision, or are accompanied by flashes of light or other visual symptoms, which may indicate a more serious condition called a retinal detachment.
