Definition of the word fluid ounce

The term "fluid ounce" originated in England during the medieval era as a measurement for liquids. It was defined as the amount of liquid that could fit in an ounce-weight (a unit of weight used to measure precious metals like gold and silver) container that was roughly the shape of a British penny. In other words, an ounce-weight vessel was wide enough to fit one British penny (which weighed approximately 28 grains or 1.77 grams) and deep enough that the coin could be fully submerged. As trade and commerce flourished, the need for standardized measurements for liquid volumes increased. In response, the fluid ounce came into use as a convenient and practical unit of measurement for liquids, as it could be easily measured using common household items like wine glasses and ale pitchers. The term "fluid" simply denotes that this unit is specific to measuring volumes of liquids, as opposed to dry or solid items. The fluid ounce has remained a popular and widely recognized measure of volume for liquids in English-speaking countries, particularly in the United States, where it continues to be commonly used in everyday life for a variety of purposes, from measuring cooking ingredients to filling medicine bottles.
