Definition of the word gossamer

The word "gossamer" stems from the Old English word "gos" which means "down," closely resembling the fine, delicate filaments found on feathers or the fuzzy coats of certain animals such as goosebumps. As the language evolved, "gos" came to refer to the light and nearly transparent fabrics commonly used to make dreams or fantasies seem less substantial. The Middle English word "gosmer" was formed by joining "gos" with "-mer," which means "one who weaves, makes (cloth)."
