Definition of the word hickory

The word "hickory" is a Native American term derived from the Algonquian languages spoken by several indigenous groups in present-day eastern United States. In particular, the word is believed to have originated from the Powhat language, spoken in what is now Virginia. The Powhat word for hickory was "pihakori," which translates roughly to "hard-nut tree" or "hard-shelled nut tree." This name refers to the hard, woody nuts of the hickory tree, also known as pips or nutshells, which are enclosed in a thick, hard shell. The Powhat people used hickory for a variety of purposes, including making tools, crafting baskets, and building houses. They also used hickory nuts as a source of food, either by cracking them open for their nutritious contents or by grinding them into flour. The word "hickory" entered the English language in the late 1600s, initially as a variant spelling of "pickary," a term used by German settlers in Pennsylvania to refer to the hickory tree.
