Definition of the word hip pocket

The word "hip pocket" can be traced back to the early 19th century when men's clothing was evolving to become more practical and functional. Prior to the introduction of hip pockets, men carried their belongings in pockets sewn into their jackets or waistcoats. However, these pockets were prone to digging into their sides as they sat or rode, causing discomfort. In response, clothing manufacturers started to add smaller pockets to the sides of men's trousers, which hung naturally from the waistline. These pockets, also called "hip pockets," were located just below the ribcage, at the level of the hips, providing easy access to small items without the need for cumbersome jacket pockets. The Oxford English Dictionary credits the first recorded use of the phrase "hip pocket" to an 1829 illustration depicting a topcoat with hip pockets. Since then, hip pockets have become a standard feature in men's and women's clothing, providing a convenient and fashionable way to carry small items like wallets, phones, and keys.
