Definition of the word housing project

The term "housing project" originated in the mid-20th century as a response to the growing urbanization and need for affordable housing in major cities. In the aftermath of the Great Depression and World War II, governments at both the local and national levels in many countries recognized the need to address the shortage of safe and sanitary living spaces for low- and middle-income families. Initially, the term "housing project" referred to any large-scale initiative aimed at providing affordable housing to a community, often facilitated by government subsidies.
