Origin of the word intensive care

The term "intensive care" originated in the late 1950s in response to the need for advanced medical treatments and around-the-clock monitoring for critically ill patients. The first intensive care unit (ICU) was established at the Connecticut Maternity and Medical Center in 1952, primarily to care for premature newborns. As hospital-based treatments for conditions like heart attacks, strokes, and severe injuries became more advanced, it became clear that these patients needed a different kind of care than what was provided in traditional hospital wards. In 1953, an anesthesiologist named Dr. John L. Brodwin created a specialized unit in the New York Hospital where critically ill patients could receive intensive care. Dr. Brodwin coined the term "intensive therapy" to describe the high-level care provided in his unit. The term "intensive care" became commonly used in the medical community soon after. The ICU as we know it today is a highly specialized department in a hospital where the best possible medical interventions, technology, and staff devoted to intensive care are brought together to provide the highest possible level of care for critically ill or injured patients. The intensive care model has since expanded to other areas of medicine, including neonatal care for premature newborns and palliative care for terminally ill patients.
