Definition of the word league table

The term "league table" originated in the late 19th century in the context of soccer (known as football in most of the world). In England, soccer clubs were initially organized into regional leagues, and at the end of each season, a table was created showing the final standing of each team based on their wins, losses, and draws. These tables, which were originally also called "ranks" or "lists," allowed fans and journalists to easily compare the performance of different teams and identify the best or most successful clubs in the country. Over time, the term "league table" came to be used more broadly to refer to rankings or listings based on any competitive or quantifiable measure, such as academic achievement, manufacturing output, or corporate revenues.
