Definition of the word lieutenant commander

The term "lieutenant commander" originated from the British Royal Navy in the early 19th century. Prior to this title's creation, the rank just below that of a naval commander was known as a lieutenant. However, as the size and complexity of naval operations grew, the need for a more senior rank than lieutenant but not quite as high as commander became apparent. In 1845, the British Admiralty introduced the rank of lieutenant commander to address this need. The new rank was intended to provide a clear path for promotion for outstanding lieutenants and to better align promotion and rank with the workload and responsibilities of these officers.
