Definition of the word lip gloss

The term "lip gloss" first appeared in the beauty industry during the 1960s. Before that, women used petroleum jelly, lip balms, or lip shiny powders to moisten and highlight their lips. However, these products left lips feeling greasy and often lacked any real shine or color. Economist Leonard Lamb created lip gloss after noticing the appeal of PVA, a clear, glossy plastic material used in building and design. Lamb's wife and her friends eagerly tested the product, which provided a sheer, shiny coating over lipstick, without feeling sticky or heavy. To celebrate the new product's debut, Brutal Magazine held a lip gloss-themed party in 1964. The next year, Lancôme released its first lip gloss, called "Le Bain de Soleil," which sold for $1.05 a tube. By the 1970s, lip gloss had taken over the cosmetics industry, with glossy lips becoming a staple beauty trend. Today, lip gloss is available in various flavors, scents, and shades, ranging from subtle shimmer to bold, dazzling finishes. Its popularity continues to endure, with people of all ages and backgrounds using it to add shine, moisture, and color to their lips.
