Definition of the word manuscript

The word "manuscript" originated during the Middle Ages, in the 14th century to be specific. The term "manuscript" combines the Latin words "manus" meaning "hand," and "scriptus" meaning "written." As parchment, vellum, and other writing materials became popular during the medieval era, scribes or professional copyists began to transcribe and write out manuscripts by hand for individuals who could not read or write. These handwritten documents included religious texts, legal documents, and literary works that could not be printed until the 15th century with the invention of the printing press. The popularity of these handwritten works led to a new vocabulary, including the term "manuscript." As books and written texts became more accessible, the term took on new meanings, such as referring to original works of art or literature, creative expressions of personal thoughts and ideas, or documents with historical significance. Today, the original meaning of the term "manuscript" still exists but is less frequently used, as digital documents and electronic print-outs have replaced handwritten works in many cases.
