Definition of the word measuring tape

The term "measuring tape" has its origins in the 16th century, during the English Renaissance. Before then, architects and builders used a variety of methods to determine the dimensions of structures and objects, including hand gestures, knotted strings, and roughly hewn wooden boards. The first recorded use of a measuring tape came in the late 16th century, when a German clockmaker named Peter comes to England and presented King James I with a spring-loaded device that could accurately measure length. The King was impressed, and he granted the German inventor a royal patent, setting off a frenzy of production and exportation across Europe. At first, these devices were called "cads" or "chordes," which referred to their role in calculating angles and lengths as part of surveying and drafting. By the mid-18th century, this term had largely given way to "measuring tapes," which better captured their versatility and importance in construction and everyday life.
