Origin of the word muscat

The term "Muscat" originated from the ancient Greek word "Μοσχάτου κόλλα" (Moschátou kolλá), which literally translates to "fragrant secretions" or "perfumed exudates". This Greek term referred to the aromatic substance released by the Musk Orchid (Baldell scalarigera), which is native to the Mediterranean region. However, winemakers began to use the term "Muscat" to describe certain grape varieties as early as the 14th century, possibly because these wines shared some of the characteristic floral and perfumed aromas that were also present in the Musk Orchid secretions. Over time, the use of the term "Muscat" became more clearly associated with specific grape varieties, such as the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Muscat Roux varieties. Today, the Muscat grape variety is recognized as one of the oldest and most widely planted grapevine families in the world, with numerous regional variations that are prized for their unique aromas and flavors. The popularity of Muscat wines continues to grow, both in traditional wine-producing regions such as the Mediterranean, as well as in newer regions such as Australia, South Africa, and Canada.
