The term "New Year" derives from the wish for a new beginning and a fresh start. It has its roots in ancient cultural traditions around the globe, which celebrate the advent of the solar year. In Roman times, the month of January was dedicated to Juno, the queen of the gods. Initially, the New Year was fixed on March 1st, coinciding with the commencement of spring and renewal. However, as the Roman republic transformed into an empire, it became essential to calculate taxes and announce military campaigns more precisely. Accordingly, on January 1st, AD 45, Emperor Julius Caesar enacted a new calendar, marking the New Year's Day on this auspicious date. In other parts of the world, such as Asia, Africa, and the Americas, New Year's traditions possess their distinctive features. For instance, in China, the New Year begins on the first new moon after the winter solstice, representing the birth of a new life. Similarly, in ancient times, the Egyptians celebrated Akhet, the inundation season, confirming the significance of nature in shaping their culture and tradition. Regardless of the genesis, these traditions underscore the significance of elections between past and future, poor and rich, darkness and light.
