Definition of the word ohm

The German physicist Georg Simon Ohm coined the term "ohm" in the early 19th century to describe a newly discovered scientific concept. Ohm's law, which describes the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance in electrical circuits, formed the basis for modern electrical engineering. Ohm discovered that when a voltage is applied to a conducting material, such as a metal wire, a proportional current flows through the material. He also found that the constant of proportionality, which now bears his name, was a property of the material itself. Ohm's Law: Voltage (V) = Current (I) × Resistance (R) This law allowed engineers to calculate the amount of voltage required for a given current or the amount of current that would flow for a given voltage. The unit for resistance, the ohm (Ω), was named in honor of Ohm's pioneering work. Ohm's law and the concept of resistance allowed electrical engineers to design and build more complex and sophisticated electrical systems, paving the way for the development of the modern electrical infrastructure we still rely upon today.
